By default, many radios including the TH-D74 and TH-D75 block frequencies that you may not be allowed to legally transmit on. But if you are allowed to transmit on a blocked frequency, the only way to unblock it is with this mod. Let’s see how to expand the range of these two radio models to: 136-174 MHz, 216-235 MHz, 410-470 MHz!

You will need to take off the antenna and knobs, as well as the brass SMA nuts behind each of them. There are special wrenches you can get to do this, or just fiddle with some pliers or a screwdriver.

Now take the battery out, unhook and pull out the rubber port covers, and take out the two screws. You should now be able to pull the front panel of the radio off from the bottom, but be careful about the ribbon cable connecting the two sides.

Then locate the resistor labeled “R761” or “R2” and de-solder it, it’s located on the bottom left of the top PCB, just below the metal RF shied (see photo below). For me, this part was fairly difficult as my soldering iron tip was not very thin. But after removing it, just put the radio back together and you’re done!
